Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
